  • 3 min read

Walking the Kumano Kodo is not only a journey through sacred forests and ancient pilgrimage routes. It is also a culinary journey through one of Japan’s most fascinating regional food cultures.

At Home Comforts Hiking, we believe that the meals you enjoy along the trail are part of what makes the experience so memorable. After a rewarding day of walking through cedar forests and mountain villages, sitting down to a beautifully prepared Japanese meal becomes a moment hikers genuinely look forward to.

Savour the Flavours of the Kumano Region

Dining along the Kumano Kodo highlights the region’s fresh, seasonal ingredients and Japan’s remarkable attention to detail in food preparation and presentation.

Meals often include:

  • Fresh seafood from the Pacific coast

  • Mountain vegetables harvested locally

  • Seasonal mushrooms such as shiitake, eryngii, and enoki

  • Locally grown rice served with traditional accompaniments

  • Delicate pickled vegetables and clear soups

Many of your meals will be served in ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) where hospitality is an art form. Here, food is often prepared kaiseki-style, a multi-course dining experience where each dish reflects the season and the local landscape.

You may enjoy dishes such as:

  • Fresh sashimi and regional seafood specialties

  • Light, crisp tempura

  • Grilled fish and meats

  • Seasonal vegetable dishes

  • Classic Japanese staples such as miso soup and rice

Near the coastal town of Tanabe, the influence of the nutrient-rich Kuroshio Current means seafood is exceptional. Guests often taste delicacies such as scabbardfish sashimi, grilled squid, and local sushi.

As the trail moves into the mountains, the cuisine shifts to reflect the landscape — showcasing mushrooms, vegetables, clear soups, and comforting seasonal dishes prepared with care and precision.

Dining the Traditional Way

Many meals are enjoyed in traditional Japanese dining rooms, often seated on tatami mats at low tables. This adds to the cultural experience of the journey, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the traditions of rural Japan.

Each meal is typically presented as a collection of beautifully arranged small dishes. The visual presentation is as important as the taste, reflecting Japan’s deep respect for aesthetics and seasonality.

For many walkers, these dinners become a highlight of the day — a time to relax, share stories from the trail, and enjoy the warmth of Japanese hospitality.

Home Comforts Hiking Caters for Dietary Requirements

Japan’s traditional cuisine is wonderfully varied, but it can also present challenges for travellers with dietary needs. At Home Comforts Hiking, we work closely with our accommodation partners to accommodate dietary requirements wherever possible, especially for guests with allergies.

When required, hikers can select from several dietary options designed to remove certain ingredients while still allowing them to experience authentic Japanese meals.

These options include variations such as:

  • Meals without meat but including fish and dairy

  • Vegetarian meals that exclude both meat and seafood

  • Plant-based options that avoid animal products

For guests with allergies, we notify accommodations in advance so they can prepare meals accordingly whenever possible.

Because traditional Japanese cooking often uses katsuo dashi (fish broth) as a base seasoning, some dishes may contain trace amounts unless specifically removed. This is one of the reasons we ask guests to provide dietary information before the trip so arrangements can be made ahead of time.

A Culinary Journey Along the Trail

The Kumano Kodo is famous for its spiritual history and breathtaking landscapes. Yet many travellers are pleasantly surprised by how memorable the food becomes.
